The Rhythm of Calligraphy (2019)
CCTV’s dramatized docuseries based on the figures in the painting “Xu Zhimo and His Contemporaries”
Xu Zhimo, the pioneering avant-garde poet writing in vernacular Chinese in the 1920s, holds an enduring place in the annals of modern Chinese literature. In 2012, Dr. Tony S. Hsu, the grandson of Xu Zhimo, had a chance encounter with Gao Xiaohua’s large-scale historical figure oil painting titled “Zhou Enlai and His Friends.” Several years later, he and his wife Lily Pao Hsu formally commissioned Gao Xiaohua, hoping to depict his grandfather and other cultural figures of the same era in a similar manner. After six years of meticulous creation, Gao Xiaohua completed the historical figure oil painting titled “Xu Zhimo and His Contemporaries.” (translated by 孙敏轩 Minxuan Sun)
